Welcome to the Winter 2024 course website for JSC270H1S (Data Science I). This course is offered jointly by the departments of Computer Science and Statistical Sciences, and is the first of three canonical data science courses designed for students in the Data Science Specialist Program.

Overview

This course will focus on introducing students to the fundamentals of data science, including data cleaning and exploration, visualization, and statistical reasoning. The course will also emphasize professional skills, such as oral/ written communication, end-to-end workflows, teamwork, and state-of-the-art computer programming tools. The practical applications of these skills will be demonstrated through guest lectures with experts from academia and industry, across a variety of disciplines. Students will be evaluated using several different techniques, including programming assignments, written reflections, and oral presentations.
